The concept of sharing with your community is essential to the operation of Nudgis media. In addition to the Timeline, which lets you exchange annotations between the various protagonists of a video, the side panel offers your viewers the possibility of retrieving or integrating the media in various forms. This tab can be configured to display all or part of its content, or even be completely hidden, depending on your needs. Let's find out how it works and what options are available.
TABLE OF CONTENT
2/ SHARING ANNOTATIONS AND MEDIA INFORMATION
SHARE AND COMMUNICATE
If you have read the article "The Nudgis Dynamic Rich Media Player", you will already know that the side panel, among many other possibilities, offers download links and other options in its "Share" tab :
But you can control its content and behavior by entering your media's Edit mode, and selecting the "Community" tab :
All the sharing options for the media now appear, giving you fine-tuned control over the formats and means you can use. Let's start by exploring the left-hand "Settings" panel. It comprises four subsections:
- Sharing, which controls the means available to the user to retrieve media. This sub-section is directly linked to the eponymous panel on the right.
- Downloads, which dictates the behaviour of download links made available.
- Annotations, which dictates the behaviour of exchanges in the Timeline
- Information, which lets you display the content of the media's parent channel in addition to the information listed below the video, such as number of views or creation date
The "Sharing" sub-section does several things : firstly, you can purely and simply deactivate it in the player's side panel, leaving only the Timeline, Slides and Search tabs visible. If you decide to activate the tab, you can then choose what you want to display there. First of all, you can display links for sharing via social networks. As you can see in the "Share this media" section of the right-hand "Sharing" panel, the social networks that can be used to share media are Twitter, Linkedin, and Facebook :
As a result, media viewers will have this option :
You can also display the email sharing link, as well as the one to link the media, and the one to embed the media :
The links can be set by the user to suit their needs, but can also be adjusted in the "Community" tab of the Edit mode.
The "Link this media" option lets you attach the video to other content, using a permanent link (permalink). This link can be a URL, a clickable thumbnail or a QR code. But you can also choose other adjustments for video playback : the timecode at which the video will start, order playback to take place automatically when the media is opened, deactivate Auto Pilot, i.e. the dynamic and automatic full-screen display of feeds, and finally choose to have the content integrated with the player only, without the rest of the start page (notably header and footer), so that the media appears without any trace of its origin. In addition to these options, QR codes and thumbnails can be opened in a new tab. To access these functions, simply select the type of link you require, then click on the small cogwheel to the left of the proposed link. The adjacent button allows you to copy the link once you have made your settings :
The "Embed this media" section allows you to display content on a third-party site via an iframe, which can also be customized. To do this, click on the gear icon to find the following options :
As in the "Link this media" section, you can order automatic media playback on opening, at the timecode of your choice, as well as disable Auto Pilot. But you can also define the exact size of your iframe, set the side panel to be closed when the media is played, or request an iframe that only plays the media's audio. Once you have made your settings, you can copy the link using the adjacent button.
The left panel sub-section of the Community tab also allows you to control downloads. You can authorise downloads to users, make download links visible/invisible in the side tab, and display or not the HLS resource accompanied by a short text explaining its use with a third-party player such as VLC :
But to use the download links, you need to make all or part of the media accessible, in different qualities if you wish. In the "Resources" tab of your video's Edit mode, simply click on "Downloadable" in the resource you are interested in :
The download links available will depend on the number of resources made downloadable
We have now reviewed all the possibilities for making your media available to your audience. Managing sharing options remains the primary purpose of the "Community" tab, but it offers other possibilities and information for the editor.
SHARING ANNOTATIONS AND MEDIA INFORMATION
Indeed, not all parts of this page are dedicated to sharing your media directly. For example, the third sub-section of the left-hand panel, "Annotations" has a different purpose :
Here you can enable or disable the right to post annotations, authorise anonymous annotations, i.e. those posted by unauthenticated users, and also give them the right to participate or not in any polls or questionnaires included in the media.
A mandatory captcha must be filled in by the anonymous user before the annotation can be posted. For security reasons, the captcha cannot be deactivated
Finally, you can choose whether or not to activate annotation moderation. If this option is activated, all annotations will have to be validated by the video owner before being made public. On the right-hand panel, you can also see the list of addresses notified when an annotation is added, either for moderation or for follow-up. Any user with access to the video can subscribe to notifications from the side panel, by accessing the filters window in the "Timeline" tab :
At the very bottom of the window, clicking on "Receive email notification of changes" allows the user to subscribe to new annotations. All users who have subscribed will be listed in the "Community" tab.
To find out more about annotations and how they work, take a look at the article "Chapters, comments and annotations in Nudgis media".
Finally, the last sub-tab, entitled "Information", allows you to display below the video the other media in your video's parent channel, as well as the direct link to the channel.
This information is displayed below the player, along with other elements such as the number of views, the date created, the date added, the contributor, as well as a link to the statistics if the viewer has access to them, another to subscribe to the RSS feed for notifications, the speaker's name, as well as the possibility of sending him an email, and finally the publication status :
If some information does not appear for you, your account does not have the permissions to see it. Contact your organisation's Nudgis administration team to change the rights and permissions attached to your account
Finally, the "Community" tab gives you information on the media's LTI links, if it has been integrated in this way :
You will find the date added, the speaker's LTI ID, the LMS of deposit, and the user's context ID. This information can be useful for finding a video if you have several Moodle instances, for example.
We have now completed this overview of how to share your media with your community, and how to integrate them on other platforms. With Nudgis, it is easy to share your knowledge everywhere, and you have full control over how you choose to do it. We hope you enjoy using our solutions!
