4/ USING A CONTENT DELIVERY NETWORK (CDN) - OPTIONAL
Overview and limitations
Nudgis offers many advanced features such as fine-grained authorization management, detailed view statistics, etc. However, these features consume a lot of CPU resources, limiting your server's ability to stream to a very large audience. While the optimal solution for increasing Nudgis performance is to upgrade the infrastructure (more powerful servers, move to a high-availability infrastructure, etc.), there is a specific feature that can be used to increase your Nudgis response capabilities under heavy load during a live broadcast without changing your infrastructure : the static player for live streaming.
The static player is a live video player that does not interact with Nudgis itself, which means that most of the features offered by Nudgis are disabled, such as :
- Authentication and permissions : Anyone with a link to the player will be able to view it.
- UbiCast player : It will not be possible to use the RichMedia enrichment tools available in other Nudgis videos.
- Nudgis internal statistics : You can however use external tools such as Matomo or Google Analytics to collect the number of views.
Prerequisites
To enable the display of the static player link, go to Administration > Player settings > Controls and resources settings and check the “Show static video player link in resources tab” box.
On the same page, we also recommend that you disable resource randomization for live broadcasts, so that the link to the player remains the same between live sessions. Otherwise, you'll have to provide your users with a new link each time.
Getting the player link
To obtain the link to the static player, you'll need to launch a live broadcast on the page in question, in order to create the player's resources. To do this, please refer to our dedicated article on starting live streams.
Once the live stream has been launched for the first time, the following elements will appear in the resources tab of your live stream edition page :
You can choose to copy the link directly to share it with your viewers, or retrieve the iframe code to embed it in an external website.
Please note that if you haven't disabled resource randomization, when you click on “Get encoder settings” the static player link will be broken and you'll need to provide your users with a new one.
Using a content delivery network (CDN) - Optional
Go to Administration > Player settings > Controls and resources settings where you can specify an optional CDN URL for the static player setting :
If enabled, the player's static links will use the CDN to serve both player and content, alleviating any bandwidth limitations you may encounter with your Nudgis infrastructure.
We recommend using the CloudFront CDN from AWS, but any CDN capable of Pull will do; however, we'll only provide instructions for CloudFront.
First, create an entry in CloudFront via https://console.aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/home
The most important parameter to set is the original domain name : enter your Nudgis domain name.
After a few minutes, the content delivery network will be available. Take the CloudFront domain name and use it to fill in the field for the static player address in Nudgis.
It's also necessary to reduce the cache time to avoid errors, by creating a custom error response.
